Week 1 (Overland Park, KS) Online MTC Experience

 ¡Hola a todos!

My first week of the online MTC was a rollercoaster with a lot of ups and downs. Monday was by far the most difficult day because right as you get into class they start speaking Spanish. It was very hard to understand them but at least they spoke some English. Tuesday was a little bit better but I still hardly knew any Spanish other than "Hola" or "Me llamo Elder Bailey". Wednesday and Thursday were by far the easiest out of the week, despite having to sit for 10 hours a day staring at a screen. Friday was still good but difficult because both of my teachers' internet connection was bad so it was all choppy and made me want to fall asleep. Saturday was my Preparation day or "P-Day". I went to the Stake Center to play basketball with my brother Dylan and some people from other wards, which was really fun to finally get out of the house. After that I pretty much spent the rest of the day outside doing service for my parents.

Learning a new language is very difficult especially in the time I have to do it but there is a certain scripture that I read in my personal study that really stood out to me. It is Doctrine and Covenants 90:11 it says " For it shall come to pass in that day, that every man shall hear the fulness of the gospel in his own tongue, and in his own language, through those who are ordained unto this power, by administration of the Comforter, shed forth upon them for the revelation of Jesus Christ." This scripture really helped me to realize that I'm not just learning a new language for me, I'm learning it for the people I am going to teach.

In a workshop given by Hermano Christopher Alacron titled "The Gift of Tongues" there was something he said that stuck with me throughout the week. "Allow yourself to fail and in doing so, you will grow in the language." No one likes to fail but failure is our biggest teacher and has really helped me grow and learn the language.

For the 6 weeks I am in the MTC I get to be with a district of 11 other amazing missionaries. They have all been so awesome, loving, kind and have taught me so much. It has only been a week but I have already created this amazing bond with all of them and love all of them with my whole heart. I wouldn't be able to do this without them.

I love you all,
Elder Bailey
